1953

Introduction of Bengali language on Pakistan Coinage: The issue of language had been a bone of contention between the two wings since the Quaid-i-Azam's first visit to Dacca in early 1948 when the founder declared in no uncertain words that Pakistan will have only a single national language, and that will be "Urdu, Urdu, and only Urdu!" On 26th January 1952, Pakistan Prime Minister Nazimuddin visited East Pakistan and reasserts that Urdu alone will be national language. Many Bengali protest to his statement. On 21st February 1952, police opened fire on a procession of students who were demonstrating against it. Eight students died. In March 1952, East Pakistan Assembly passed a resolution for making Bengali national language along with Urdu. In 1953, it was realized that the majority of the Pakistan's population speaks Bengali. Therefore, a new pair of coins were introduced, bearing the value of coins written in Bengali, English and Urdu languages. On 22nd April 1954, Maulvi Abdul Haque, popularly hailed as the Father of Urdu, leads 100,000 demonstrators outside the National Assembly building in Karachi against PML's decision to make Bengali a second national language. Despite that on 07th May 1954, Pakistan Assembly declares that Bengali is to be the second National Language of Pakistan alongside Urdu. East Pakistan became an independent country as Bangladesh on 16th Dec 1971. Pakistan recognized Bangladesh during 2nd Islamic Summit on 22nd Feb 1974. Therefore from 1953 to 1974 all Pakistan coinage bear the value of coins in Bengali language along with Urdu.

The obverse side is KM#11 as above but reverse side is KM#16 (1 Pice 1961). It seems that someone was trying to re-produce this low mintage, 1 Pie 1953 coin on the already struck KM#16 coin.
