Karachi and Mashhad declared sister cities
* Mayor Pezhman says Pakistan is a brother country and strong and long-lasting relations bind us
KARACHI: Karachi and the Iranian city of Mashhad have been declared as sister cities, says a Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) statement.It said that Lord Mayor of Mashhad Syed Muhammad Pezhman and Administrator KMC Muhammad Hussain Syed on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to declare Karachi and Iranian city Mashhad as sister cities.Earlier, the Lord Mayor of Mashhad along with his delegation visited Civic Centre where the administrator gave a briefing about the city’s infrastructure, development projects, financial resources and different departments of the KMC.The visiting delegation also went to Command and Control Centre in Civic Centre and reviewed the city through central surveillance system.Mayor Pezhman on this occasion said Iran will extend full cooperation for various projects of Karachi, including the projects of engineering, light railway, solid waste management, education, transport and cultural promotion. He said Pakistan is a brother country and strong and long-lasting relations bind us.Administrator Karachi informed the delegation about development process going on in the city and said more than 500 small and big projects were presently underway in Karachi including the mass transit system, solid waste management, slaughtering, construction of underpasses and flyovers and bus rapid system which were initiated under financial and technical collaboration of different countries.
Iran and Pakistan have lot of potential and we must take benefit of the technical capabilities and experience of experts in both countries.He said we would have to think like developed nations and create our own resources for the development and progress of our city. Both countries would exchange delegation of experts in the next two months so that we could avail the benefits of progress made by Iranian city Mashhad in various fields. Iran offers a huge market for Pakistan’s livestock and frozen foods among other items, which would give us handsome foreign exchange. He said mutual cooperation between Iran and Pakistan would enhance further in the coming days. Before this on behalf of citizens of Karachi, KMC held a civic reception in honour of the Lord Mayor of Mashhad and his delegation.Speaking on this occasion the Mashhad Mayor said he was feeling pleasure while visiting Karachi on the invitation of Administrator Karachi. He said his visit was aimed at extending mutual cooperation between the two countries which would provide boost to the trade, cultural and business activities in both countries.Mayor Pezhman expressed his gratitude for the citizens of Karachi, saying that his delegation received lot of respect and honor here that had increased the respect of Pakistani nation and especially citizens of Karachi in our hearts.Addressing the reception, Administrator Karachi said the visit of Mashhad delegation was a proof of our deep association.The purpose of this visit was to further strengthen the ties between the two countries and to invite the participation of Iranian experts and investors in the mega projects of Karachi so that the city could be made an international city. app
